Originally called the White Horse Inn, the bar may even be older than 90 years, as its earlier operations would have been on the down low because of Prohibition. The talent here is that good. The monthly Happy Hour sip-n-swap, where you bring up to five books you’re ready to swap for new ones. In 2022, one of Cubbyhole’s bartenders wrote an open letter to patrons asking for more kindness in the continuing wake of the pandemic.

Grab some dinner too, as the kitchen serves up classic bar food with some salads, seafood, and Italian dishes mixed in.

Purple Rhino Lodge

2920 Beneva Road, Sarasota

The Purple Rhino Lodge is more than just the oldest gay bar in Sarasota, it’s also a private, nonprofit that doubles as a community center, too. Though we had a not-so-tiny panic attack when we learned Palace’s original location was going to be shutting down, we quickly recovered when we learned the iconic drag brunch bar was simply moving a few blocks away on Ocean Drive.

Barcodes Orlando

4453 Edgewater Drive, Orlando

If you’re into dive bars, bears, or just a friendly, laid-back neighborhood watering hole, then Barcodes Orlando is definitely a place for you to check out.

Owner Patty Dingle believes she may be the only (or at least rare!) queer woman of color sole owner of a queer/gay bar.

With a large dancefloor and a huge beer garden, this club gets you happy indoors and outdoors. Put on your cowboy boots and hat every Monday for Full Moon Mondays for some two-steppin’ and country line dancing. 

Hank’s Bar

5026 Edgewater Drive, Orlando

One of the oldest gay bars in Orlando, Hank’s Bar is that friendly, neighborhood, no-frills bar where “everybody knows your name.” Leave your plastic at home, Hank’s is a cash only bar with no cover.

Enter: Licht, meaning “light”. It’s a beer and wine bar with DJs, special theme nights, game nights, and karaoke, where everyone fits in. Though it came very close to closing in 2020, a successful fundraising campaign helped the Tavern keep its doors open.

In Chicago’s Boystown nabe one bar looms larger (literally) than all the rest: Sidetrack.

Yes, please! With the exhilaration of a pulsing beat and a dark dancefloor, you can meet others over a delicious cocktail or mocktail, and enjoy the support of community.

the “gayborhood.” It’s chill, dimly lit, and decked out with stuff you usually find in a garage, like model cars and license plates. The brainchild of DC LGBTQ+ nightlife veteran Dave Perruzza, the 10,000-square-foot space features plenty of room for games as well as two patios. There are different theme nights weekly, so check their website before you go.

Enigma Bar & Lounge

1110 Central Ave, Saint Petersburg

Enigma Bar & Lounge is an absolute favorite spot on Central Avenue in The Edge District.

Plus, depending on the night, there are drag shows, karaoke, dance parties and special themed nights. Shoot some pool or hang out on the outdoor patio. Here are our favorites. It’s a must-experience when in Tallahassee.

Southern Nights Orlando

At the top of our list is Southern Nights Orlando.

When downstairs, take a seat at the bar for top-notch people watching, generous pours and karaoke. The beloved Cubbyhole has been around since 1994.

This 25,000 square foot nightclub with three levels and a huge patio has been around since 1981.
