As always with an Akwaeke Emezi trial—and many of the books I’ve included on this list—this was incredibly dark.
Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States by Samantha Allen
It’s easy to look at cultural stereotypes and think that every American on the LGBT+ spectrum must either be living on the liberal coasts, or hiding deep in the closets of the heartland “flyover” states. But then she meets Takumi, and now her chill summer plans are thrown into chaos.

The Default World isn’t scared of making its main character extremely unlikeable, and it’s better for it.
Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender
Set on the lush shores of St Thomas of the Virgin Islands, Hurricane Child follows Caroline, a girl with the misfortune of having been born during a hurricane.
There’s some coming of age content, but it’s more focused on the immediate interactions of the two boys in the novel. Reading this book made me delightfully happy the entire time.
37. 22. I truly cannot explain enough how deeply moving this book was. Rahmani’s novel is not a love story in the conventional sense, it’s a literary fiction novel of a Muslim academic who’s struggling to get by and to find herself in the world.
The two sisters used to be snakes, and now they’re immortal human beings drifting in and out of each other’s lives. An issue that orbits all of these themes is the persistent question of desirability, which Talusan increasingly holds up to the light as an entirely arbitrary label that holds different meanings in different parts of the world.
It’s a celebration, and certainly worth your time.

The conflict and emotional tension between each of these characters and with themselves is masterful.
The Other Boy is a beautiful story about staying true to yourself, and about the value of those in your life who will stand with you — no matter what.
17. I was sobbing, laughing, and smiling idiotically at various points while reading this book.5. And thank goodness for that! Central to this dark and strange series are the children who’ve travelled through these doors, discovered a place they truly belonged, and then found themselves shut out of it.
We hope you’ll enjoy these remarkable books as much as we did!
